IDSB Information Exchanges bring together researchers and our partners in government, industry, policy and charity sector. The theme for this exchange is Online Safety. Researchers within the IDSB have an extensive portfolio of published work relating to online safety and harm.
“Online harm” is an umbrella term used to refer to any online activities which may cause harm to individuals or society. As people move between and within digital systems online harm can easily spill offline, and this is reflected in how harm is studied.
Our focus in the Institute on this theme is primarily on understanding, mitigating and preventing harm and promoting well-being. We'll be presenting our research and inviting deeper discussion around themes including:
· Online communication harms: extremism /radicalization and conspiratorial thinking
· Online crime/ adversary behaviour/ malevolent influence
· Mitigation/ engagement to reduce harm
· Vulnerable populations and intersectionality
· Privacy and AI, safety and justice (including smart home)
· Researchers access to information from regulated services, led by Ofcom
The idea is to make connections, showcase our research and to discuss in more detail what areas we should be looking at, where we should be focussing our energies over the next 12 months to two years, in terms the challenges to online safety.
The Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour (IDSB) is an interdisciplinary research institute, leveraging and combining a wide range of expertise in psychology, technology and security.
